Slapped Gauahar as She Wore Short Skirts

Incident

Malik, a junior artist, had been attending the shooting for the reality show 'India's Raw Star', which was anchored by Gauahar, for three days before slapping her during the shooting for the finale in Film City on Sunday.

Malik claimed he had tried to control himself for three days despite seeing Gauahar wear short clothes but couldn't take it anymore and slapped her in front of 2,500 audience members and 250 bouncers.

He said he had tried to make Gauahar "understand" that wearing short clothes was against their religion but had slapped her when the argument began to get heated. "He had been attending the shooting for a few days and said he didn't like the clothes Gauahar was wearing.

He said short skirts got him attracted to girls and damaged other youngsters' minds as well," said a police officer from Aarey police station. In his statement to the police, Malik said, "Actresses are the face of society and they should not wear skirts and short clothes as they make youngsters get attracted to them sexually.

These days, boys who are minors are also committing crimes such as rape and molestation and many of them keep obscene photographs of actresses in their pockets. If actresses stop wearing short clothes, crime will decrease and lead to a better society."

"Malik came to Mumbai in August from Abu Dhabi, where he was working as a waiter. He was working as a driver in Mumbai and also took up work as a junior artiste on a part-time basis. He dreamt of becoming an actor," said a police official.

Senior Inspector Vilas Chavan of Aarey police station said, "The accused, Malik, didn't like seeing girls in skirts and said that they attracted him and other youth to them sexually. He claimed he slapped the actress because she was wearing skirts in shootings for the last few days. We produced him in Borivli court and he was remanded in police custody till Thursday."

"If actresses stop wearing short clothes, crime will decrease." For all those hoping that awareness of women's rights would have increased after the incessant media coverage and commentary following repeated incidents of rapes and violence against women, this one statement by the man who slapped Gauahar Khan would probably send them into the depths of despair.

So blatant is 24-year-old Akil Malik's seeming disregard for the feelings of others, and so smug is he about his notions of morality, that he told the police after his arrest that he had slapped Gauahar to teach her a lesson so that she would never wear short skirts in her life.

Malik said that he had slapped Gauahar to help other youths like him. He claimed that since he was sexually attracted to girls who wear short skirts, other youths could too. He told the police that girls wearing short clothes "damage the brains" of youngsters and instigate them to commit crimes.

Celebrities remain silent on the Gauahar Khan ‘slapping’ incident

Former ‘Bigg Boss’ housemate and anchor of ‘India’s Raw Dance’, Gauahar Khan was slapped on the sets of the reality show on Sunday (November 30), in between takes at Film City.

A member of the audience, identified as Mohammed Akil Mallick (24), slapped and touched her inappropriately during the break of the show, attacking her for wearing a short dress.

What’s even more shocking than the incident is the lack of support from industry members who otherwise never refrain from expressing their views and opinions on social media. However, this time, only handful of celebrities including Farhan Akhtar, Amrita Arora and Madhur Bhandarkar came out in support of the model.

More power to Gauhar khan…N shame on u Akil Malik!!Disgusted by this so called moral policing..

    — amrita arora (@amuarora) December 2, 2014

Shocked to hear that Gauhar Khan got slapped for alleged indecency. Absurdity just touched a new level. Disgusting and highly condemnable.

    — Madhur Bhandarkar (@imbhandarkar) December 1, 2014

Dearest natural selection, please help us out-evolve morons like the one who slapped Gauhar Khan. Sincerely…

    — Farhan Akhtar (@FarOutAkhtar) December 1, 2014

However, actor Arjun Kapoor, who was present on the sets of the show, to promote his upcoming film, ‘Tevar’, did tweet his disappointment at what happened.

    Disturbed shocked and appalled

    — Arjun Kapoor (@arjunk26) November 30, 2014

“It is the most disgusting thing I have ever been a witness to and I am appalled that some Indian men have a thought process that is so lowly. I think what that man deserves is what he will get hopefully. The law will put him in his place,” Arjun told DNA.

Is the lack of support from the film Twitterati because Gauahar Khan is a small star? More than 24 hours since, the incident made headlines, there have been no hashtags either. And most of the celebrities who ‘take a stand’ on moral issues are mumb too.

Aamir Khans Satyamev Jayate 3 tickets better than Salman Khans Bigg Boss 8

Salman Khan seems to have lost his Midas touch with falling TRPs for Bigg Boss 8!

While both Aamir Khan's Satymev Jayate and Salman's Bigg Boss 8 performed lower than its previous seasons, Aamir Khan's TV outing still managed to fare better than the Salman Khan show.

The controversial reality show is known for its inevitable excitement and hype which in turn raises the TVMs for the change.

Going by the TVT rating, the opening episode of BB8 scored a whopping 7.9 compared to Satyamev Jayate's season opener which bagged about 4.9.

Satyamev Jayate maintained consistent ratings and touched 6.7 TVM whereas Salman's show could barely touch 4.4 at the max.

But in the long run, BB has failed to sustain its ratings and has dipped way below expectations with ratings dropping to an unexpected low.

Although Satyamev Jayate has not been promoted much, Bigg Boss 8 saw some heavy promotions both before and after the show went on air. But the dipping TRPS are indicative of the fading audience interest in Salman's Bigg Boss. What will Salman and the Colors team do to revive their old ratings is what we need to see!

Sridevi starrer English Vinglish to hit theaters in Romania

The Sridevi-starrer ‘English Vinglish’ is all set to hit theaters in Romania. The 51-year-old actress made her Bollywood comeback with the 2012 film which was directed by Gauri Shinde.

“’English Vinglish’ releases in Romania for a whole new audience. @ErosNow @gauris,” Sridevi posted on twitter.

The film also starred Mehdi Nebbou, Adil Hussain, and Priya Anand, among others.

’English Vinglish’ was also released in Japan in June this year to thunderous response.

We will never remake Awara Says Randheer Kapoor

To step into the shoes of lagendary actors Shri Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor is nobody's task says Actor-director Randhir Kapoor. He will never remake superhit movie 'Awara' says Randhir Kapoor.

Randhir aged 67, who last directed Henna in 1991, said he thought of remaking his father's classic once but left it in the middle.

The Housefull actor said next year they will start a new project under RK Films banner, whose last outing was Aishwarya Rai starrer Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999).

"People have often asked me to do a remake of Awara with Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. When I took the idea few steps forward, we all got scared. Where will we get another Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor? Where will I get composers like Shankar-Jaikishen? Lyricists like Shailendra? And also the dream sequences in the film. I am not in favour of making remakes," Randhir said.

"It's my fault. Due to my laid back attitude, the project is getting delayed. By next year we will start a new film under the RK banner," he said.

Asked about the genre of his upcoming venture, Randhir said, "We will make a good film which people will want to watch and get entertained by. May be on the lines of Kal Aaj Aur Kaal."

Randhir would be next seen in Super Nani opposite Bollywood diva Rekha. The film will hit theatres on October 31.

Anushka debuts her character Jagat Janani in PK poster

First motion poster of Aamir upcoming film ‘PK’ featuring Anushka Sharma has been released.

Three posters, featuring Aamir and actor Sanjay Dutt were released earlier but this is for the first time that Anushka’s look has been revealed.

The actress is seen alongside Aamir in the 55-second video clip. She is sporting a bob cut hairstyle in the poster.

The video starts with Anushka standing alone in a loose-fitted police uniform, similar to Aamir’s look in the second poster, and later joined by Aamir.

The video shows them first behind the bars and then on a scooter. The transistor makes it way here as well, as both the actors are seen carrying it in the video.

Anushka is heard calling herself ‘Jagat Janani’, while giving the voice over for the poster.

“Ei dekha….. humaar Jaggu…. tiranjister ke saath,” tweeted Aamir in Bhojpuri language. The 49-year-old actor is learning the language for his role in the film.

Aamir had created a sensation by appearing nude in the first poster of the movie with only a transistor protecting his modesty.

‘PK’, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is expected to release on December 19, this year.

Anushka Sharma was recently seen in a video posted on Twitter, clearly stating that after Aamir Khan, it was now her turn to feature with the ‘controversial’ transistor. She tweeted, “Mujhe tukur tukur dekhna hai? Toh pehle isse dekho,” along with the link to the special video.

Salman Khan’s Bigg Boss Season 8 house : Click Here For Breaking Updates, Photos

The film’s fourth poster was launched on the instant messaging app WhatsApp yesterday as promised by her in the video- a recent strategy that major commercial films have been adopting as part of their film promotions.

Anushka Sharma attended a press conference, where she launched the fourth motion poster in the media, the motion poster which was a little disappointing.

She fulfilled half her promise by posing with the transistor, but with a khaki on her, unlike what she mentioned in the video (about the controversial transistor, clearly stating something similar to the first poster of P.K.)

However, being a motion poster, it did not end there. Anushka Sharma looks exactly like P.K. aka Aamir Khan of the third poster, and hence she also says, “Conphujiya gaye. Main P.K. nahi hoon. Main hoon jagat janani.”

After which follows Anushka Sharma and Aamir Khan‘s hilarious expressions at various places- in prison, while travelling, with our very own transistor, on a scooter, cycle and in very fashionable dresses.

She sports a black short dress with a hat teamed with an ankle length boots, a jacket tied around wait and a small bracelet completes her simple yet stylish look. A small portion of the film was shot in Austria and Sonakshi's glam avatar might be a scene shot in the foreign land.

Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami review movie value of honesty

Well-intentioned message movie about the value of honesty
-ibnlive

Ekkees Toppon Ki Salami has the seed of a good political satire but it’s done by inconsistence script and episodic narration that swings genres
-indiaglitz

Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami is a tiresome film and at least half an hour longer than it should have been
-livemint

Director: Ravindra Gautam

Cast: Anupam Kher, Neha Dhupia

Buried beneath the farcical humor, melodramatic performances and manipulative tear-jerking in Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami is a well-intentioned message movie about the value of honesty. The film is positioned as a satire about politics and corruption, and Rahil Qazi's script makes veiled references to well-known leaders and headline-grabbing events. But Qazi and director Ravindra Gautam can't seem to strike a consistent tone for their storytelling, see-sawing unevenly between broad humor and genuine pathos.

Anupam Kher is Purushottam Narayan Joshi, a lower middle-class BMC employee who prides himself on being upright to a fault. Unfortunately this earns him scant respect from his two sons, Shekhar (Manu Rishi Chadha) and Subhash (Divyendu Sharma). When Joshi Sr is dishonorably discharged on a false corruption charge on his retirement day, he dies of shock. It's up to his sons now to fulfill his dying wish - the old man wants a 21-gun salute for leading a life of unflinching honesty. Subhash enlists the help of his girlfriend (Aditi Sharma), the speech-writer of a corrupt chief minister, to pull off this impossible feat.

Constructed around this promising premise, the film's makers nevertheless stretch their story to breaking point as it plods on indulgently for 2 hours and 20 minutes. There are moments of terrific humor, most involving Neha Dhupia's buxom starlet (one of the best things in the film) who is having an affair with the chief minister. Another hilarious track involves Sudhir Pande becoming a reluctant replacement for Joshi's corpse.

Much of the second half is evidently inspired from Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, but there is none of that film's sparkling wit at display here. The final scenes are unabashedly schmaltzy, and while the message itself is important, it is conveyed with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

I'm going with two out of five for Ekkees Toppon Ki Salaami. Promising but doesn't quite take flight.

5 reasons why Priyanka Chopra Mary Kom is a must watch

mary-kom-posterBiopics have certainly become the flavour of the season, with more and more people showing interests in capturing the lives of famous unsung heroes on the big screen. 'Mary Kom' is one such film. The film which released yesterday is an astounding ode to womanhood, a brave testament to the indomitable spirit of women.

Here are 5 reasons why you should not miss 'Mary Kom'.

Mary Kom's story:
Did you know that Mary's real name was Chungneijang? I did not and if you are also someone who only recognises her as MC Mary Kom, the Indian boxers who brought us gold at the Olympics, you better watch this film. The valiant struggle against all oddities, the battle that Mary has been through most of her life has been captured beautifully on screen. So much that at times, you get goose-bumps! I haven't read the book but after the film, I definitely plan on finish the book as well. And you should, too!

Another efficient Biopic:
It was about time that Indians move focus their focus from Cricket and cricketers. In this daily dose of the bat, ball and the wicket, we somehow forget to honour some of the other Sporting legends who have brought us equal amount of pride and fame in the global arena and at times, even more than what any Cricketer could do. 'Paan singh Tomar' had traced the life of another athlete-turned-bandit and 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' was an amazing crowd puller depicting Milkha Singh's character with such cinematic brilliance. Omung Kumar's 'Mary Kom' just takes the baton forward and with conviction.

Priyanka Chopra:
While one would have expected Priyanka Chopra to be the biggest reason to watch this film, even the actress would agree that more than her, it is Mary's story that comes alive on screen. Having said that, it is also true that if it was not Priyanka, it would have been difficult to get someone to play Mary this effortlessly! Priyanka does a wonderful job at it (almost nailing it!), bringing out the right emotions and infusing life into her character. We have always loved Priyanka for the multiple risks she has taken all throughout but for the last few years post a stunning Jhilmil Chatterjee, Priyanka seems to have been making some really bad choices. But 'Mary Kom' is a testament of the acting prowess that Priyanka commands over her roles and she pulls the film totally on her shoulders. And after watching the film, we just have one sincere request to Chopra—Can we have more of 'Mary Kom', 'Barfi' and 'Fashion' from you and less of the 'Zanjeer'-s?

Portrayal of human emotions:
Underlying the story of hardships, valiance, perseverance and triumph, lies a story of human emotions—an extremely emotional background plot that revolves around Mary's relationship with her father. In a country like India, where parents find it hard to accept their children's choices, Mary's father was no different. Initially resilient and hostile, Mary's father soon started accepting and engaging in his daughter's victory. Although it definitely puts us through an emotional wringer, it also hammers the fact that Omung Kumar has struck the right chord.

A fitting ode to woman power:
sports has always been one area of general interest to most Indians. But have Indians ever looked at boxing or maybe badminton or weight lifting the way they get intrigued in a T-20 match or maybe an exciting Mohun Bagan versus East Bengal football match? No! We don't even know most of our sporting legends who along with the Indian cricketers have brought India recognition and glory. And even if we do, we hardly care about the women in those sports! Most of us would not even be able to name an Indian sportswoman and the ones who do, can only name barely a few!  'Mary Kom' raises a toast to the spirit of women and the power of 'She', the film is an enchanting ode to womanhood at large. Although it depicts Mary Kom's life, it does give out a message that any woman can be another MC Mary Kom, only if they wished to fight against all oddities rather than getting stamped by them.

Rani Mukerji meets Gujarat CM to promote Mardaani

RANI MUKERJI with Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, during the promotion for her upcoming movie Mardaani in Ahmedabad.

Mardaani Review ApunKaChoice HT Firstpost Zee News

'Mardaani' review: Gritty narrative, no nonsense action

ApunKaChoice Review

The ApunKaChoice movie review of 'Mardaani'. Dear Bajirao Singham, you’ve had enough of bashing the bad guys. Now make way for Shivani Shivaji Roy. Her ‘majhi’ is ‘satakli’ differently. Slap-happy, trigger-happier, loose of tongue, taut in resolve, this Mumbai Crime Branch police inspector may not be the beefcake to give the baddies wet pants at the very first sight, but she’s got the grit and gumption to gut the wily lawbreakers. In her crosshairs is the kingpin of the child sex trafficking racket.

Yash Raj Film’s Mardaani is thankfully shorn of all the frills and pomp the banner is known to swaddle its stories with. The film’s plot is quite credible and the exploits of its female protagonist doesn’t always call for suspension of disbelief.

The film tells the pertinent tale of a gutsy female cop (Rani Mukerji) who sets out to find a kidnapped girl Pyaari (Priyanka Sharma) and unearths a sordid drug and sex trafficking racket with its smooth talking kingpin Walt (Tahir Bhasin) holed somewhere in Delhi. Shivani vows to free Pyaari from the clutches of this creepy racketeer within 30 days. A herculean task that the Lady Mardaani with her gun and gaalis is fully up to.

Director Pradeep Sarkar mostly hits all the right check marks in Mardaani. After the overtly weepy Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and the faux cool Lafangey Parindey, Sarkar takes care this time not to make a hash of the story by screenwriter Gopi Puthran. His effort is amply buttressed by cinematographer Artur Zurawski’s earnest camera, and editor Sanjib Datta’s sharp and neat scissors.

The film does careen a tad too much into drama at the fag end and for a while it seems Sarkar is out to squander all the effort, but thankfully, Mardaani regains its foothold despite the somewhat slipshod finale and winds up as a film that merits a watch.

Rani Mukerji is the film’s dynamo. She takes care not to overplay her hand, but makes her no-nonsense character Shivani Shivaji Roy direct, upfront, sharp-tongued, and yet not without the feminine softness that comes through in the few scenes she has with her onscreen hubby (Jishu Sengupta).

The soft-voiced Tahir Raj Bhasin plays the role of a young, unassuming sex racketeer with restraint and Zurawski’s camera and lighting give him a dark, sinister aura.

Thankfully, there aren’t any songs to steal your attention away from the cat-and-mouse game unraveling between the cop and the kingpin. The background score is considerate towards your eardrums, and the pace is brisk enough to keep you riveted throughout the running time. And yes, there’s also an interesting twist in the tale.

HT Reviews

The Hindi film industry’s idea of an action film has changed with time, and director Pradeep Sarkar’s latest venture Mardaani is an example of this.

Now, the filmmakers are concentrating more on realistic stunt scenes, but is this enough to bring mainstream Bollywood at par with foreign action films? Why am I drawing this comparison? Simply because we are seeking inspiration from Hollywood, that too in an obvious way. Liam Neeson-starrer Taken (2008) had a similar premise, and Sarkar has adapted the concept to suit the ‘masala’ seekers.

There are spoilers ahead, so we suggest you to come back to this article after watching the film. In case you’re proceeding, thanks.

In a way, it’s a revenge film featuring daredevil Mumbai Crime Branch inspector Shivani Sivaji Roy (Rani Mukerji) and Walt (Tahir Bhasin), a young-dynamic-organised criminal, as two fighting entities.

They both are influential in their respective fields and know the tricks of the trade, which eventually turns the story into a cat-and-mouse game. Only the cat was too predictable.

As the trailer suggested, Shivani leaves her den and arrives in Delhi to grab Walt by his neck after the abduction of a shelter home girl. Rest of the film is an extension of the idea that even a heroine can play Chulbul Pandey.

Laga Chunri Mein Daag and Lafangey Parindey have shown Pradeep Sarkar as a storyteller who carefully selects the canvas, but loses the essence of the theme as the film progresses towards the culmination point.

The same happens in Mardaani where too much emphasis on high-voltage drama dilutes the conflict. The linear structure of the screenplay doesn’t help either.

Shivani is gutsy, capable of doing stunts, and enjoys full support from her subordinates, but how she waits till the end to raise the excitement meter is unconvincing.

The constraints of popular Bollywood film are clearly visible throughout the film, and it doesn’t serve any purpose because enhancing drama part restricts the hard hitting subject to unfold properly. You don’t wait for the dangerous villain to act vehemently before grabbing him, especially when you’ve all the evidences against him.

A bit of overlooking on part of the director also hampers the flow of the story. A goon has been fired upon in the police custody, but none of the cops looks towards the sniper as if they expected it. Ironically, it happens twice.

The climax also can’t boast of clean execution of the script. The absence of any will to grab the gun on part of baddie Walt is conspicuous.

The research part of the film is satisfactory and the writer Gopi Puthran uses some plot points quite judiciously, especially the second twist of the film, but where Gopi fumbles is the characterisation of the supporting cast. Be it Dr Bikram Roy (Jisshu Sengupta) or Pyaari (Priyanka Sharma), they all are over-dramatic.

However, the writer should be praised for inserting some police humour. There is a scene where undercover cops are ready to raid, and a feisty woman unknowingly sits in their vehicle. Unfortunately, this was one of the rare light moments in the film.

The politician-gangster nexus is inevitable in such stories, and Mardaani is no exception, but they don’t seem menacing or really venomous. You see the point? The drama fails to grip the audience in an anticipated way. A sprinkle of religion has also been used, which of course steals away the seriousness of the issue.

Tahir Bhasin impresses with his cool demonour, and he gives out the glimpses of his latent potential in some scenes. He can be groomed into a good talent, if handled with care.

Mardaani is Rani Mukerji’s show, she gets undivided attention. Nearly all the scenes feature her, and she doesn’t disappoint. The conflict line could have been demarcated with more finesse and her character could have emerged as one solid Mardaani.

There is just one song in the film, which plays in the background, and it works in favour of the film. The story is paced well and editing covers up for some average acting and technical glitches. In fact, it’s the editor who manages to make Mardaani a thriller. The camera captures the essence of Delhi streets, but fails to give a closer look of the landscapes in Rajasthan.

Mardaani’s philosophy and message are conveyed to some extent. It may be liked due to its women oriented theme, but I don’t think it would give any impetus to the process of women empowerment. Watch it if you have been a Rani fan, but don’t look for any depth in the story.

First Post Review

There probably isn’t a single kid from the '90s who doesn’t remember the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) by heart, and this includes the way each character pronounced certain words or delivered certain lines (“Rahul, juice!”). After watching the morning show of Mardaani at a suburban multiplex, it seems that Rani Mukerji, who became a household name after KKHH, has also found it hard to shake off that nitty-gritty herself.

As the lead actress of Mardaani, a song-less thriller about child trafficking, she plays what is supposed to be the most realistic character she has ever portrayed. However, there are several moments in this film where she, as tough-as-nails cop Shivani Shivaji Roy, sounds exactly like KKHH's Tina Malhotra. As she gives a local goon a dressing-down in public, her words sound tough and mean, but her delivery is more along the lines of “Anjali, aaj main tumhe ek kahaani sunane waali hoon.”

It is at such moments, where Mukerji mistakes dialogue delivery for elocution, that Mardaani is at its weakest. Barring those, this is actually a pretty well-made and engaging thriller from director Pradeep Sarkar. Does this mean he has finally succeeded in exorcising the ghosts of the disastrous Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007) and the even-worse Lafangey Parindey (2010)? Hmm. Yeah. Sorta.

For over two-thirds of its running length, Mardaani coasts along like a kayak on still waters. It opens silently, with Roy and her team, on their way to an encounter, chatting and joking about more mundane matters. She is an inspector with the Mumbai Police crime branch, married to a Bengali doctor named Dr Bikram Roy (Bengali star Jisshu Sengupta, in a thankless supporting role). She doesn’t have any children, but treats her niece Meera and a girl she rescued from the streets named Pyaari (Priyanka Sharma) as her own. When Pyaari goes missing from her homeless shelter (why she hasn’t been legally adopted by the Roys is a question the movie doesn’t answer), Roy starts investigating her disappearance.

Things start to get murky. A Delhi-based syndicate that indulges in trafficking of both drugs and underage girls seems to be behind it. In come your standard-issue thriller elements — cat-and-mouse games, confrontational phone conversations, car chases — and to Sarkar’s credit, they are all executed quite well.

Mardaani also gives us a charismatic antagonist in the form of Tahir Raj Bhasin, the surprisingly young kingpin of this operation who is clearly a huge fan of Breaking Bad . At first, this connection is established in a subtle manner, with the camera focussing momentarily on an ‘I Am The One Who Knocks’ poster in his room during a key scene; later on, he asks Roy to call him ‘Walt’, explaining that the name belongs to “a hero from an American TV serial”.

Sarkar shows great deft and economy through much of the film, and his direction is ably supported by Sanjib Datta’s precise editing and Artur Zurawski’s effective, hand-held camerawork. Given the industry this was made in, it is commendable that Sarkar avoids the temptation to disrupt the narrative through musical montages – for the most part.

The final act, however, is a huge let-down, largely because Mardaani chooses to go all Chak De, India! on us and resolves the story in a fairly tame manner – even though what is actually being shown on screen is actually quite horrific. Add to that a horrible Sunidhi Chauhan song and the climax actually ends up doing a disservice to its delicate subject matter. It’s a pity because it almost looks like that’s the point where the folks from Yashraj Films stepped in and said, “All right, Pradeep, we’ve given you enough of a free hand. Now it’s time to do things our way.”

Mukerji, when she isn’t reciting her lines as described earlier, is far more credible when given the license to mutter expletives under her breath (thank you, Censor Board, for not muting them out). While her screen presence is effective, her performance lacks the kind of intensity the role needed. The screenplay and characters are one-note, but this is thankfully redeemed by the film’s solid supporting cast, who help give the film the authenticity it needs.

Overall, Mardaani is a better commercial film than most and Sarkar’s best film since Parineeta. However, if there is one solid reason to watch this movie, it’s Bhasin’s Walter-White-as-played-by-Seth-Green act. The young actor, who was impressive even in his brief appearance in One By Two earlier this year, seems like a talent to watch out for. Next time, hopefully, he’ll have more meat to chew on.

Zee News Review

In the world of Bajirao Singham and Chulbul Pandey, Shivani Shivaji Roy has come as a breath of fresh air. ` Mardaani` does not have Rani Mukerji play a tomboy – it is a woman doing her bit to fight in a man`s world.

Rani has been acknowledged as a fantastic actor. In that regard, she has very little competition in the industry. The fact that she is possibly the best has been established well with `Mardaani`. The film deals with the difficult subject of human-trafficking and Director Pradeep Sarkar tackles the issue very carefully.

Rani plays a Mumbai crime branch officer, Shivani who is a hard-bitten cop with a mission to set things right. She is not afraid to bend the rules, to nab criminals and is respected by her fellows. She gets involved in the investigation of busting a sex-trafficking racket when a girl close to her goes missing. She has to follow the trail fast, as anyone involved is getting killed fast. The investigation leads her to Delhi where she goes into the nitty-gritties of the city to nab the elusive `Walt`, played by Tahir Raj Bhasin.

Tahir was a revelation of sorts. The minute you set eyes on his character, you begin to loathe him. He has powerfully played a young urban villain, without any cheesy lines. Realistically, he plays a suave mastermind that makes it challenging for Shivani to nab him on every step of the way.

`Mardaani` is also a proof of how good supporting cast can make a world of a difference to the feel of the movie. Even though the flick is centred around Rani`s character, the smaller roles have provided the much-needed realistic feel of the film.

Coming back to the lead actress, Rani is a favourite of Pradeep Sarkar. She had the pivotal role in `Laaga Chunari Mein Daag`, even though the movie bombed. The Chopra Bahu has worked hard for this role and she looks fit as a fiddle. She has learnt the guerilla martial art krav maga to look her part and she literally packs a punch in all the action scenes. She has not been styled to look like a man, she looks like all normal women do. She is not all glamour, nor is she made to look sans make-up. It is a role that women will relate to.

Inspiring as it is, the flick does has a few problems. One is despite the realism, there are a few dialogues that are overly dramatic and unnecessary. The background score is good but could have been much more enthused to build-up a climax and set the tone of the movie.

The lack of absurd over-the-top action is a relief, as watching cars fly and glass break in every second scene of a movie has taken a toll on the quality of cinema that an average movie-goer has to go through. This flick is much more grounded and makes a thoughtful statement about the issue of trafficking and abduction.

Like `No One Killed Jessica`, the movie wakes you up to the injustice of the world and to the underbelly of a crime that is horrendous to even think about. Sarkar paints a great picture of our law keepers and he sets an example of a woman police officer with Shivani. The character has the prospect of becoming a role model and even the audience was impressed by the movie which has been made as crisp as possible with good, if not great, editing.

If you are tired of the nonsensical action, and over-the-top drama, `Mardaani` is the film for you. The movie has the power to invoke thought and subjects you to question the ultimately ineffective candle light vigils that need to now metamorphose to a more powerful resistance to lawless cruelty and nip crime at its bud.

Amul and Amir PK Poster

They say that 'Imitation is the best form of flattery'! And when it comes to 'imitation'... we mean, 'flattery', who better than the milk major Amul can do better, through its quintessential cartoons.

Ever since Aamir Khan's almost-nude poster of his upcoming film PK was out, it not only gave rise to a million controversies, but also to a whole bunch of 'spoofs'! Well, if we had our way, then, we would have given the prize of the best spoof to none other than Amul, for having come up with its trademark caricature of its Amul girl alongside Aamir Khan's character carrying a bag and the controversial tape recorder while eating bread (with Amul butter of course). The ad also carries the slogan 'Khaa, PK Jaana' (with) 'Amul: Bared And Butter'!

Akhil gets to know that his real father is none other than the richest diamond merchant, 'Pannalal Johri' who had cheated his mother. An over excited Akhil goes to break this news to his pal 'Krishna' whereas his pal before hearing out Akhil, breaks the news that the multi millionaire tycoon 'Pannalal Johri' is dead, Akhil's sadness is camouflaged with happiness as he comes to know that pannalal Johri has no heir and he would definitely be the 'official waaris' of the tycoon. Akhil breaks this news to his girlfriend's father who on hearing Suddenly starts pampering and sugar coating Akhil as his 'jigar ka tukda'

With hatred for his father for betraying his mother, Akhil attends his father's funeral and sheds crocodile tears but is all smiles from inside. Akhil gets the biggest jolt when the family lawyer informs him that his father has willed his entire wealth and property to his one and only faithful DOG.....Entertainment. Akhil cries his heart out to his friend who gives an idea of killing the dog as the dog was living Akhil's life and Akhil living the life of a dog...

The plan to eliminate the dog is chalked out for which Akhil has to be close to the dog, so Akhil coaxes the family Lawyer to give him a job at his father's place. The family lawyer appoints him as the caretaker of the dog. Akhil and his friend roll out plans to kill the dog in such a way that it appears like an accident but the dog in return turns out to be more intelligent than them.

Humans have 5 senses while Dogs have six, and this is proved in a series of events where Akhil and Krishna try to kill the Dog and fail miserably in each and every try.

During this chain of events where Akhil tries to eliminate the dog, we introduce a third force which are actually the far off relatives of Pannalal - The brothers- 'Karan-Arjun' who have their wicked pangs tagged on the wealth of Pannalal even prior to Akhil's realization. This brother duo knowing that the dog's life span is around twelve years, their bigger enemy is Akhil and they decide that it is more important to eliminate him. So what transpires are sequences where the dog is being planned to kill by Akhil and his friend while in turn Akhil and His friend are being planned to be killed by brother duo. At one point of time, brother duos are on the verge to execute Akhil when the dog plays an important part of a savior and saves Akhil. The incident gives Akhil a big emotional jolt, realizing 'inhumanity of human is returned by humanity of an animal' Akhil begs for forgiveness to the dog and leaves the place. The Brothers present a fake presentation in the court. The dog is thrown onto the streets where Akhil comes and joining hands with the dog like two heroes decide to take revenge from the two villains.

What follows next is the chain of events where the whole group Akhil, Saakshi, Krishna, Johnny & the Dog take the two brothers at task forms the balance part of the film....

Do Akhil and the gang succeed in taking revenge with the two wicked Villains Karan-Arjun...???

Does the Dog Die in the end....???
